Contest

Student media from member institutions compete in contests each year in the organization’s Previously Published/Broadcast Contest. Each student media may submit two entries per category (except in overall excellence and online categories) of material published or broadcast during the fall and spring semesters. Entries are then judged by individuals, including professional media representatives, from around the country. Student and student media winners are then recognized at the organization’s annual spring convention awards banquet.

Previously Published/Broadcast Contest divisions (Deadline Dec. 23):

  • Newspaper Division 1 – newspapers published 4-5 times per week
  • Newspaper Division 2 – newspapers published 1-3 times per week with enrollment in upper    half of entries
  • Newspaper Division 3 – newspapers published 1-3 times per week with enrollment in lower half of entries
  • Newspaper Division 4 – newspapers published bi-weekly with enrollment in upper half of entries
  • Newspaper Division 5 – newspapers published bi-weekly with enrollment in lower half of entries and newspapers published less than bi-weekly
  • Yearbook Division 1 – yearbooks  from Newspaper Division 1 schools
  • Yearbook Division 2 – yearbooks from Newspaper Divisions 2, 3, 4, 5 schools
  • General Magazine – open division
  • Literary Magazine – open division
  • Radio – open division
  • Television – open division
  • Online – open division

At the annual spring convention, students also compete in On-Site Contests under deadline.
For the contest, students may work from pre-developed materials, attend an activity/event or witness an activity/event. Each member institution attending the convention may enter one student in each contest. Entries are judged at the convention by individuals including professional media representatives. Student winners are then recognized at the convention awards banquet.
